A word on condition: Because of the character of their use and storage wrench condition can hardly be judged to the same standards as other tools. So rather than using a grading scale I have tried to note all faults such as missing parts, cracks, pitting, over cleaning, repairs, etc. Likewise the wrenches in this auction that are in exceptional fine or excellent condition have been so noted, even a common wrench that as survived the years in almost unused condition is a rarity. This leaves the wrenches listed with no mention of condition which covers all those that are in good to good plus collectible condition and with no major flaws.

Other info:
* Measurements are usually rounded off to the nearest 1/4".
* The markings on the wrenches are in all capital letters.
* a / separates markings on one side of the wrench from the other side.
* If a wrench is misnumbered in a photo the description number will prevail.
* All farm type wrenches are cast malleable iron unless noted otherwise.

0013. IRLAND PIPE WRENCH CO. - BOSTON, MASS - PAT JULY 7, SEPT 23, 1903 - OCT 3. 1905" - - 15.5". Advertised as "The Irland Automatic Pipe Wrench". Uses a spring-loaded lever underneath the handle to open the upper jaw, which closes automatically. Patents were issued to David Irland of Chicago. Some markings light, some not readable, Good+. 0014. BRAND / PAT. NO. 221027 - - 12.5" spring assisted self adjust wrench patented by Oscar Becklin of Los Angeles, Calif. Described in the patent as a bolt, nut, and pipe wrench. Probably mfg. by the Balin Tool Co. of Las Angles, Calif. Different handle than seen on other examples. Good+, over cleaned. (not in Schulz)  PAT

0015. 14" MAGNUM TOOL CO - PAT PEND / MUESCO - HOUSTON, TEXAS - - 14" self adjust wrench with a pivoting, spring loaded upper jaw that can be set to four different notches on the handle. Patented by Carlos V. St. Claire, San Bernardino, CA. Also found marked MAGNUM PIPE WRENCH vs. MUESCO - HOUSTON, TEXAS. Excellent, like new. (S335)  PAT

0016. THE MATTHEWS WRENCH - DENVER, COLO. - - 13" Self adjust nut wrench with pivoting upper jaw. Patented by Edward Matthews of Denver, Colorado. Excellent. (slightly different handle than S355)  PAT

0017. RHINO 14 IN - PAT. No. 143898 / RHINO WRENCH CO. DENVER - - 13" self adjust pipe or nut wrench with a spring loaded pivoting upper jaw. 0019. BARWICK WRENCH - PATENTED JUNE 6, 1871 - - 13" plier type nut and pipe wrench with a short adjusting arm attached to the pivoting upper jaw. Mfg. by the Barwick Wrench Co. of Boston, Mass. and later Billings & Spencer. Patented 6-6-1871 by Wm. Barwick. Excellent condition with original nickel plating. (S855)  PAT

0078. THE WATERBURY WRENCH CO. - PAT. APPLIED FOR WATERBURY, CONN. - - 5" combination quick and screw adjust bicycle wrench with a spoke wrench on end of handle. A design patent for this wrench was issued to John C. Ives of Waterbury, Conn. on 8-24-1897. Some spots of corrosion on plated finish. (S112)  PAT

0079. Unmarked - - 4.75" center screw adjust wrench. This is a rare variant of the uncommon Capitol wrench with the brass open frame handle instead of the hollow round handle more often seen. Frederick B. Seymour's Feb. 27, 1883 and Louis Schlesinger's Sep. 29, 1891 patents apply. Good+. (see S809)  PAT  and  PAT - - PiC

0080. PREMIER - 7 - POPE MFG. CO. - - 4" side screw adjust bike wrench with sleeve type handle. Excellent with most of the original plating. This wrench and the next two were made for the Pope Mfg. a pioneer American bicycle manufacturer from Cleveland, Ohio. They later built several different automobiles. (not listed, no info)

(with a "B" in triangle logo) / BILLINGS PATENT JAN 15TH, 1895 - - 5.5" bike wrench with an unusual knurled worm gear and rack teeth (on the flat side of the handle) adjustment. 0084. VICTOR - OVERMAN WHEEL CO - CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS - PATENTED JAN 6, 1891 - - 5" center screw adjust with ruler markings on the shaft (hollow handle, exposed on one side variant.). Patented by John Stanley of Coventry, England. The Overman Wheel Co. made "Victor" bicycles. Excellent with most of the original plating. (S101)  PAT

Seldom found in this large size with an extra heavy jaw spring and a latch that locks the jaws open. If you could figure out how to fasten a piece of cheese to this latch it could double as a rat trap. Patents were granted to Frederic P. Robert of Lynnbrook, L.I., NY on Feb. 21, 1922, Frederick Ruesch of Poughkeepsie, NY on Nov. 18, 1924, and Robert Hoe of Poughkeepsie, NY on Aug. 21, 1928. The patent papers show a cork screw which evidently was not incorporated in the actual tool. Of all these tools the ruler may be the only one that could actually be used. Patented April 6, 1851" (not a patent issue date. Also see Schulz no. 378). Good+ with a couple small manufacturing flaws on the lower jaw. A Missouri Valley Wrench Club member from England has identified this as a product of Palmer & Sons of Birmingham, England. British patent of April 16, 1861 No. 4354 applies.
